Resources for Providers

Start Your Own Regulated Program

Interested in becoming a regulated child care provider?
Contact Childcaring by phone or email to receive a
packet of start-up information. We also offer technical
assistance.

We promote your child care program by providing families
with referrals. When a family calls looking for child care, they
provide information (their needs, child's birthday, days and times
needed, etc.). This is placed into our providers database. If your
information matches what the family is looking for, you will be
included on our computer-generated list. We do not recommend
one program over another.

Are you (or someone you know) interested in providing child care? Attend one of the info sessions and you could be eligible for a start-up grant!

Certified Child Care

State law (s. 48.651) requires counties/tribes to certify providers who receive public funding but are exempt from the licensing law. DCF promulgates rules establishing standards for the certification of child care providers and contracts certification functions to local counties and tribes. Most counties have made certification available for all family day care providers, whether or not public funding is involved.

While certification is available in all counties, a child care certifier is on staff at Childcaring who provides services in Adams, Marquette, and Portage counties. Contact Childcaring (1-800-628-8534) or visit the Department of Children and Families website for more information regarding certified child care.

Licensed Family Child Care

In Wisconsin, a family child care license is required if you are going to care for four or more children under the age of 7 years who are not related to the provider. A licensed family child care provider is limited to caring for no more than eight children total. Many resources are available from a variety of agencies, to assist you in exploring this career option and in preparing to apply for a license.  A pre-licensing consultant is available on staff at Childcaring.  Contact Childcaring (1-800-628-8534) or visit the Department of Children and Families website for more information regarding licensed child care.

Licensing Group Child Care

In Wisconsin, a group child care license is required to care for nine or more children for less than 24 hours a day for compensation.

Still not sure? Contact Childcaring, Inc. for more information or visit the WI Department of Children and Families child care regulation page.
